Yes...Kinda

Did I get Better This Week?

Happy Sunday everyone!

Mid March Struggles: Large Physical Swing Changes, but not taking those thoughts on course.

Now that might seem obvious to most people, but I want a teacher who can make a bunch of small tweaks over time. I hate changing something big and then not being able to play the game for 6 months. It's absolutely horrible, especially when you're hooking and shanking but technically "doing the right things."

So what have I been doing to make sure this doesn't happen to me? It doesn't mean I don't still have my terrible rounds, but I've really been focusing on separating practice from playing the game.
When I get on the course I have one simple swing thought and it's just one word. Right now it's "short." I'm imagining myself as Jon Rahm, because inevitably it just ends up being a normal backswing anyway.

This keeps things simple, lets me stay athletic, and stops me from overthinking or forcing some massive overhaul mid-round. Practice is where the real work and tweaks happen. The course is where I trust what I've built and just let it flow with that one-word cue.

The other thing I'm working on is hinging the club properly. I'm still struggling with it a bit, but I want it to become a byproduct of feeling like my hands are traveling down a straight line and almost pressing down to create the hinge naturally. As you can see right now, I'm not doing an amazing job of it yet.

The last piece in my full swing I'm focusing on is getting my weight onto the front side properly and feeling like my front hip is working up a wall. This is because I have a tendency to spin out a lot, which kills my power and consistency.

These are small, connected feels I'm layering in slowly so nothing blows up my swing overnight. One-word cue on the course stays simple, but in practice I'm dialing in these hinge and weight-shift details to build better habits without forcing a total overhaul. Progress is slow and frustrating sometimes, but it's way better than being stuck in "technical hell" for months.

Beyond full swing, I’ve been putting in serious work on my putting too. It’s actually starting to pay off—over the weekend I played a par 59 course and shot a 64 with 4 one-putts. That felt pretty damn good after all the effort.
Here’s what I’m focusing on right now:

Path: My putter needs to go straight back and straight through. I’m trying to use the center-shafted putter to my advantage since it helps keep things square. I’ve always had a bad habit of whipping it inside on the takeaway, which pushes a ton of putts right. So I’m drilling that straight-back feel to stop the arc from creeping in.

Follow Through: I used to let the putter travel way too far after impact, like a massive finish that kept going long after the ball was gone. That caused all kinds of speed and direction issues plus it made distance control super inconsistent. Now I’m keeping it simple: however far I take it back is how far it goes through after the ball. Matching the lengths front and back has helped me stay smooth, control my pace better, and stop over-accelerating or flipping at the end.

It’s still a work in progress, some days the old long finish sneaks back in, but when it clicks, the ball rolls pure, lags look dialed, and everything feels way more consistent. Small tweaks, consistent reps, and keeping it simple on the course seem to be the key so far.

I am always working on my 3 Release System for chipping. You can find Dan's book by checking the link or visiting our Pro Shop. It's a staple in my game.

Something I've been pondering recently: wedge grinds. I play Callaway Jaws Raw, all in S grind. It's great for my actual full swings, but around the greens I'm wondering if I want the leading edge to sit a bit lower for more versatility on those tight lies and open-face shots. More updates on that to come as I test a few options.

I'm also planning to do a full WITB soon for all of you!

Thanks so much everyone, and drop your comments below on what you're working on right now!
